Thought leadership content & third party content are the ways to get AI mentions, AI referrals, AI citations, and AI visibility for brands.

When a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, or Perplexity for the best option in your category, the brands named in that answer win the conversation. Those are AI mentions, and they are becoming the new measure of brand visibility. In this episode, Joanne Z. Tan, Founder & CEO of 10 Plus Brand, Inc. and creator of AIXD.world, explains how AI mentions differ from AI citations, how both lead to AI referrals, and the three steps brands can take to earn them.

AI Mentions vs. AI Citations: Two Different Paths to Visibility

An AI mention puts your brand’s name in the answer. An AI citation links to your content as a source. An AI referral is where both pay off, when the AI recommends you and moves a prospect your way. The two don’t always travel together. Semrush’s October 2026 AI Visibility Index found that fewer than half of the brands AI mentions most were also among the websites it cites most, in both the UK and the US. A brand can dominate AI answers while AI barely cites its website, which means your reputation across the web now matters as much as your own pages.

Why Third-Party Content Drives AI Mentions

AI builds its answers from far more than a brand’s own website. Reviews, comparisons, how-to content, creator coverage, and community discussions all shape which brands get named. AI also absorbs new material quickly. A VaynerX and Profound report found the median time from publication to first AI citation was just 6.8 days, so brands need an always-on publishing rhythm.

Each platform also reads the web differently. They rely on different search indexes and trust different sources, from YouTube to Reddit to LinkedIn. The result is that a brand can earn strong AI mentions on one platform and go unmentioned on another. Joanne explains why a single-platform strategy is no longer enough.

3 Steps to Earn AI Mentions and AI Referrals

Step 1: Give AI Clear, Consistent Brand Information to Support AI Mentions

Keep your websites, social profiles, business listings, and product pages complete and current. When information is missing or outdated, AI fills in the gaps, and those errors can erode brand trust.

Step 2: Build Authority for AI Mentions with Thought Leadership Content

Original research, firsthand experience, and distinctive points of view keep their value even after AI summarizes them. Tools, calculators, and templates resist summarization altogether, giving AI a reason to send users to your site.

Step 3: Earn AI Mentions Through Third-Party Content

Ask AI platforms about your category, note which third-party sites they cite, and build relationships with the creators, publications, and communities that shape those answers but haven’t yet discussed your brand.

Joanne Z. Tan points out that a company’s size and SEO budget no longer guarantee visibility. The brands that combine thought leadership content with credible third-party content will be the ones AI mentions, cites, and recommends.
